Visionaries Tickets – The Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House
Visionaries tickets are for The Royal Ballet’s autumn double bill at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden: Jerome Robbins’s Dances at a Gathering and Kenneth MacMillan’s Song of the Earth, two of the twentieth century’s great plotless ballets on one evening. Robbins sets a group of dancers loose to Chopin’s piano music; MacMillan answers with a meditation on life, love and loss to Mahler’s song cycle, with live singers.

Visionaries: Robbins and MacMillan, the Programme
Dances at a Gathering
Jerome Robbins made Dances at a Gathering for New York City Ballet in 1969: ten dancers, a solo pianist on stage and around an hour of Chopin mazurkas, waltzes, études and nocturnes. There is no story, only a community of dancers meeting, flirting, competing and parting, and it is one of the most human ballets in the repertoire.
Song of the Earth
Kenneth MacMillan created Song of the Earth in 1965 to Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, after the Royal Opera House board turned down the idea of using the score. It was first danced by the Stuttgart Ballet and entered The Royal Ballet’s repertoire the following year. A man, a woman and the Messenger of Death move through six songs for tenor and mezzo-soprano, and the closing Farewell is among the most moving passages in all of ballet.
Visionaries Running Time and Age Guidance
The performance lasts approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, including one interval.
Best Seats for Visionaries
We source seats in the top categories: the Orchestra Stalls for closeness to the stage, the Stalls Circle for a slightly raised view, and the Donald Gordon Grand Tier for a complete picture of the stage with balanced sound. For a mixed programme the Stalls Circle and Grand Tier show the patterns of the ensemble in Dances at a Gathering especially well.
Your Visit to the Royal Opera House
The Royal Opera House is on Bow Street, London WC2E 9DD; Covent Garden Underground station is the nearest, with Leicester Square and Holborn a short walk away. There is no dress code: smart-casual is fine, though many people dress up for an evening at Covent Garden. Latecomers may be held until a suitable break.

Robbins and MacMillan at Covent Garden
Both works have long Royal Ballet histories. Song of the Earth is one of MacMillan’s most revered creations and has been revived regularly since 1966, and Dances at a Gathering entered the company’s repertoire in 1970, a year after its New York premiere.
