How to Get Last Night of the Proms Tickets

There are three ways into the Last Night.

The public ballot, run by the BBC and the Royal Albert Hall, allocates a share of seats by random draw. Details are published when the BBC launches the season in April. Demand is many times the number of seats, and most applicants go home empty-handed.

Promming is the standing tradition. Arena and Gallery places are sold at a low price and are among the hardest tickets of all to secure for the Last Night. TicketsToSee does not sell Promming places.

Members’ seats and private boxes are the third route, and they are the Last Night of the Proms tickets for sale on the open market. They are privately held seats sold with a confirmed location, so there is no draw and no queue. Members’ Seats: Why They Can Be Resold

When the Royal Albert Hall opened in 1871, a large number of its seats were sold on 999-year leases to help pay for the building. Those leases still run. Their owners, known as Members, hold seats for most events in the Hall, including the Last Night. The leases carry a right of transfer, which is what allows these seats to be resold when general box office tickets cannot.

What Is the Last Night of the Proms?

The Last Night Proms concert is the finale of the eight-week BBC Proms season, which opens in July and closes in September. It runs in two halves with an interval.

Last Night of the Proms Songs and Running Order

The second half of the Last Night at the Proms follows a running order audiences know by heart:

Before the final anthems, the conductor gives a speech from the podium, thanking the musicians and the Prommers and reflecting on the season. Union flags, party hats and patriotic costumes fill the Arena, and the Prommers lead the singing. It is the one classical concert of the year where the audience is part of the show.

Royal Albert Hall Proms History

The Proms began on 10 August 1895 at the Queen’s Hall in London, founded by impresario Robert Newman and conductor Henry Wood to bring classical music to a wider audience at low prices. The BBC took over the concerts in 1927, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra has been the principal Proms orchestra since 1930.

After the Queen’s Hall was destroyed in the Blitz in 1941, the Proms moved to the Royal Albert Hall, where they have stayed ever since. Henry Wood’s bust stands in front of the organ throughout the season and is garlanded on the Last Night, a thank-you to the man who started it all.

BBC Last Night of the Proms

The BBC organises the Proms season, chooses the programme and broadcasts the concert, but it does not own the seats. The Royal Albert Hall runs the box office and the public ballot with the BBC, and around a quarter of the Hall’s seats belong to its Members, who hold them on long leases. Last Night of the Proms on TV, Radio and in the Park
