Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, the Opera
The story
Riccardo is adored by his people and secretly in love with Amelia, the wife of Renato, his closest friend and adviser. The fortune-teller Ulrica predicts that Riccardo will be killed by the next man to shake his hand, which turns out to be Renato. When Renato discovers Amelia’s feelings he joins the conspirators, and the masked ball of the title becomes the scene of the assassination, with Riccardo forgiving his killer as he dies.
The music
Verdi wrote Un ballo in maschera in 1859, between Il trovatore and La forza del destino, and it is one of his most varied scores: Riccardo’s lyrical ‘Di’ tu se fedele’, Amelia’s ‘Ma dall’arido stelo divulsa’ at the gallows, Renato’s ‘Eri tu’, and the light, teasing music of the page Oscar set against the darkness of the conspiracy.

Un ballo in maschera, a Short History
Verdi’s opera was first set in Sweden around the assassination of King Gustav III in 1792, but censors in Naples and Rome refused to allow a king to be murdered on stage. The action was moved to colonial Boston, and the opera opened at the Teatro Apollo in Rome on 17 February 1859. Many modern productions return to the original Swedish setting.
