Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, the Opera

The story

In Nagasaki, Pinkerton takes Cio-Cio-San as his bride in a marriage he regards as temporary, then sails home. She refuses to believe he has deserted her. Three years later he returns with an American wife to claim their child, and Butterfly takes her own life.

The music

Puccini’s 1904 score includes the love duet that closes Act I, the Humming Chorus and Butterfly’s aria of faith, ‘Un bel dì, vedremo’.
