La Cenerentola Tickets at Glyndebourne for Rossini’s Cinderella Comedy

TicketsToSee supplies La Cenerentola tickets for Glyndebourne, where Rossini’s Cinderella comedy returns in a new staging by Max Webster, the first new production of La Cenerentola at the house in over 20 years. Glyndebourne is a country-house opera house in the Sussex Downs and has hosted its summer Festival since 1934. A performance there is built around the whole evening: a long garden interval, a picnic on the lawns and an auditorium admired for its acoustics. La Cenerentola suits that setting. Rossini replaced the fairy godmother and the glass slipper with disguise, misjudgement and a pair of matching bracelets, and the result is one of the most elegant comedies in the repertoire.

Demand is typically strong for a new production at Glyndebourne. The house is small, the Festival receives no public subsidy, and Members have priority booking ahead of the public, so choice of performance and seat can be tighter for those who book late. For devoted opera followers, La Cenerentola tickets also mark something: a milestone birthday or anniversary, a long-planned first visit to Glyndebourne, or a reward at the end of a demanding year. Every booking is handled by our dedicated Private Client Team, so you speak to a person who can advise on seats and answer questions about the performance.

Tickets are delivered digitally as a PDF 7 to 10 days before the performance, and your booking is confirmed when you order. View Packages to see the La Cenerentola performances and seat options.

La Cenerentola plays within the Glyndebourne Festival, which runs every summer between May and August.

La Cenerentola: The Story of Rossini’s Cinderella Opera

La Cenerentola is Italian for Cinderella, and Rossini’s opera turns the fairy tale into a human comedy. Angelina, known as Cenerentola, serves in the faded household of her vain stepfather, Don Magnifico, alongside his daughters Clorinda and Tisbe. Prince Ramiro, searching for a bride, swaps places with his valet Dandini to see how people behave when they think no one important is watching. His tutor Alidoro calls at the house disguised as a beggar. The stepsisters turn him away, and Angelina gives him food and warmth. At the palace ball she gives Ramiro one of a pair of matching bracelets and tells him to find the woman who wears the other. A storm, a broken carriage and a bracelet on a wrist settle the matter, and Angelina forgives her family. There is no magic in it, only people, and that is why it endures.

La Cenerentola at Glyndebourne: Max Webster’s New Production

This is a new production for the Glyndebourne Festival, directed by Max Webster, the Olivier and Tony-nominated theatre director known for spectacular, theatrical stagings, making his Glyndebourne debut. Enrique Mazzola conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for all but one performance, which is conducted by Tess Jackson. The Festival announcement calls it the first new staging of the opera at Glyndebourne in over 20 years, so audiences who know the opera from earlier seasons will see it freshly, and those who have never seen it will meet it in a production made for this house.

Rossini La Cenerentola Cast and Conductor

The announced cast includes Svetlina Stoyanova as Angelina, Levy Sekgapane as Don Ramiro, Mikhail Timoshenko as Dandini, Marco Filippo Romano as Don Magnifico and Michael Mofidian as Alidoro. Casting is set by Glyndebourne and can change, so we recommend checking the cast for your chosen performance before travelling.

La Cenerentola Tickets: Where You Sit at Glyndebourne

La Cenerentola tickets through TicketsToSee are reserved seats in the top three price categories of the Stalls, Foyer Circle or Circle. Glyndebourne is a small opera house with excellent acoustics and great sightlines throughout, which means a good seat here is about proximity and comfort rather than rescuing a poor view. Your choice between the three areas depends on how you like to experience opera, and our team can talk you through the options for your party before you book.

Stalls, Foyer Circle and Circle

The Stalls are on the ground level of the auditorium, while the Foyer Circle and Circle sit above. All three areas offer reserved seating at Glyndebourne, and seat positions within each area are confirmed on the booking page for your performance.

La Cenerentola Glyndebourne: Timings, Interval and Picnics

Every Festival performance at Glyndebourne has a 90-minute dining interval, and the opera, performed in two acts, is shaped around it. Glyndebourne publishes the start time for each performance in its performance schedule, and recent Festival seasons have started in the late afternoon, with the grounds opening about two hours before curtain-up. That gap is useful: it gives time to change, walk the gardens and settle at a picnic table before the first bell. You can bring your own picnic, book a picnic table, or dine at one of the restaurants and marquees on site. Pets are not permitted in the grounds, with the exception of assistance animals.

Getting to Glyndebourne for La Cenerentola

Glyndebourne is at New Road, Lewes, BN8 5UU, in the Sussex Downs, four miles from Lewes and about an hour from London. It can be reached by road or rail, and Glyndebourne runs a coach service from Lewes station that is booked through its own how to get here page. Because a Festival performance includes a long interval, most guests plan the whole day around it: a leisurely arrival, the gardens, the picnic and the return journey after the final scene. We suggest checking the finish time in the performance schedule before booking onward transport.

What to Wear to La Cenerentola at Glyndebourne

At the Festival, evening wear is traditional, and many guests dress as they would for a formal occasion, which is part of the pleasure of the day. Glyndebourne sets out its guidance on its what to wear page. Comfortable shoes are sensible for the gardens, and a wrap or jacket is useful for the evening air. Whatever you choose, the opera is a comedy, and the mood in the auditorium is celebratory.

Rossini’s La Cenerentola: Origins and History

Rossini’s La Cenerentola, with a libretto by Jacopo Ferretti, was first performed in Rome in 1817, when the composer was 24. Its full title is La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo, meaning Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant. The title role is written for a mezzo-soprano, and the score is known for its ensembles and its virtuoso vocal writing, which is why casting matters so much and why it attracts singers and followers of the voice. Glyndebourne has staged the opera before, and this new production is the first at the house in over 20 years.

Gioachino Rossini La Cenerentola in Brief

Gioachino Rossini wrote it as an Italian comic opera in two acts. It keeps the shape of the Cinderella tale, the overlooked daughter, the disguised prince and the test of character, but removes the supernatural. Goodness, not magic, wins.

Cinderella, Cenerentola and Other Names for the Opera

The opera is searched for under several names. La Cenerentola is the Italian title and Cinderella is the English meaning, while the composer’s name separates Rossini’s version from the many other Cinderella operas and ballets. The full title is La Cenerentola, ossia La bontà in trionfo. At Glyndebourne the production is listed under its Italian title, and our tickets cover those same performances.

Planning the Day Around La Cenerentola

A visit to Glyndebourne for the opera is a day out as much as a night at the opera. Glyndebourne asks guests to check the grounds opening time in its performance schedule before setting off, because it varies with the performance start time. If you plan to picnic, look at Glyndebourne’s guidance on bringing your own picnic and on booking a picnic table. If you are travelling from a distance, Glyndebourne also publishes advice on where to stay. Our team is happy to talk through the day, from the journey to the interval, so that the opera is the only thing you need to think about on the night.

Also at the Glyndebourne Festival

La Cenerentola sits alongside other productions in the Glyndebourne Festival. If you are planning more than one visit, see our pages for La Traviata at Glyndebourne and Carmen at Glyndebourne, or return to Glyndebourne Opera Tickets for the full programme.
