Janáček’s Káťa Kabanová, the Opera
The story
In the town of Kalinov on the Volga, Káťa is married to the weak Tichon and dominated by his mother. While Tichon is away she meets Boris, and their few nights together end in a public confession during a storm and Káťa’s death in the river.
The music
Janáček based the opera on Ostrovsky’s play The Storm and wrote it in 1919 to 1921, inspired by his love for Kamila Stösslová. Its score moves from intimate lyricism to the elemental music of the storm.
