Handel’s Hercules

The story

Dejanira waits anxiously for Hercules to return from war. When he arrives with the beautiful Iole she is consumed by jealousy and sends him a robe soaked in the blood of the centaur Nessus, believing it a love charm. It burns him to death, and Dejanira is driven to madness.

The music

Handel wrote Hercules in 1744 as a musical drama in English. Dejanira’s mad scene, ‘Where shall I fly?’, is one of the greatest he wrote for any singer.
