Wagner’s Götterdämmerung, the Opera

The story

Siegfried leaves Brünnhilde to seek new adventures and arrives at the hall of the Gibichungs, where Hagen, son of Alberich, drugs him into forgetting her. Brünnhilde, betrayed, conspires in Siegfried’s murder, then learns the truth, rides into his funeral pyre and returns the ring to the Rhinemaidens as Valhalla burns.

The music

Wagner completed Götterdämmerung in 1874, a quarter of a century after he began the Ring. Its great set pieces include Siegfried’s Rhine Journey, the Funeral March and Brünnhilde’s Immolation Scene, one of the most demanding roles in opera.

Timing your day

With afternoon starts and two long intervals, a performance runs from mid-afternoon into the evening. Many people book dinner for an interval at one of the house’s restaurants.

Götterdämmerung Running Time and Age Guidance

The performance lasts approximately 6 hours and 10 minutes, including two intervals.

Best Seats for Götterdämmerung

We source seats in the top categories: the Orchestra Stalls for closeness to the stage, the Stalls Circle for a slightly raised view, and the Donald Gordon Grand Tier for a complete picture of the stage with balanced sound. For a performance of this length, comfort counts: the Stalls Circle and Grand Tier give a complete view of the stage with excellent sound.
