Mozart’s Così fan tutte, the Opera

The story

Ferrando and Guglielmo are certain of the loyalty of the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella. Don Alfonso, with the help of the maid Despina, bets them otherwise. Disguised as exotic strangers, the two men court the opposite sister, and by the end of the day both women have given way, leaving all four lovers wiser and more uncertain than when they began.

The music

Così fan tutte was the last of Mozart’s three operas with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, after The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Its ensembles, including the trio ‘Soave sia il vento’, and Fiordiligi’s defiant ‘Come scoglio’ are among the finest music Mozart wrote for the stage.

Così fan tutte Running Time and Age Guidance

The Royal Opera House publishes the running time closer to the first performance.

Così fan tutte, a Short History

The opera was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 26 January 1790. Long considered frivolous by nineteenth-century audiences, it is now recognised as one of Mozart’s greatest operas.
