Bayreuth Festival Tickets for Wagner’s Festspielhaus

Bayreuth Festival tickets open the doors of the Festspielhaus, the theatre Richard Wagner built on the Green Hill to stage his own operas exactly as he intended. Every summer since 1876, apart from the war years, Wagner’s music has returned to the house designed for it, and a first visit to Bayreuth remains one of the great ambitions of any opera lover.

Access is famously hard. The Festspielhaus seats fewer than 2,000 people, the season runs for around thirty performances, and the official allocation has long meant waits of several years. Guests come to us for a first pilgrimage to the Green Hill, a milestone birthday, a return to a favourite production or an evening with clients. TicketsToSee has sourced tickets for sold-out events for over 20 years, and your seating area and price are confirmed with you before you commit.

Tell us which operas you want and we will suggest the best run of dates.

Bayreuth Festival Tickets Prices

Bayreuth Festival Price Guide

Seats for Bayreuth are priced on request, because availability differs by opera, date and seat category. We quote per person in pounds sterling, excluding VAT, and VAT and delivery are shown before you pay. Premieres, Parsifal and the central stalls command the highest prices; later August dates and side seats are usually easier to secure.

What to Expect at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus

Festspielhaus Seating and Acoustics

The auditorium is a steeply raked, fan-shaped amphitheatre with no central aisle, so every seat faces the stage. The orchestra plays beneath a covered pit that Wagner called the mystic abyss, which blends the sound and gives the house its famous acoustic. The seats are wooden and famously firm, and many regulars bring a thin cushion.

Performance Timings and Intervals

Performances begin at 16:00 and have two intervals of about an hour, time for dinner on the Green Hill. Longer operas such as Die Meistersinger finish at around 22:30. A brass fanfare played from the balcony of the Festspielhaus calls the audience back before each act, and doors close promptly.

Bayreuth Festival Dress Code

Bayreuth is one of the most formal evenings in the opera calendar. Dark suits or dinner jackets and evening or cocktail dresses are the norm. The house has no air conditioning and summer evenings can be warm, so light fabrics are sensible.

Dining on the Green Hill

The restaurants beside the Festspielhaus serve dinner in the intervals and book up for the whole season. Reserve your tables when you confirm your dates.

Getting to the Bayreuth Festival

Travel to Bayreuth

Bayreuth is in Upper Franconia, northern Bavaria. Nuremberg Airport is about an hour away by car, and regional trains run from Nuremberg to Bayreuth in around an hour. The Festspielhaus stands on the Green Hill, north of the town centre and a short walk or taxi ride from the station.

Hotels in the town are limited and fill for the whole festival. Many visitors stay in the surrounding Franconian countryside or in Nuremberg and travel in for each performance. Book accommodation as soon as your dates are confirmed.

The History of the Bayreuth Festival

Richard Wagner founded the festival to present his operas in a theatre built to his own design, away from the distractions of a large city. The first festival, in August 1876, gave the first complete performance of Der Ring des Nibelungen, and Parsifal received its premiere here in 1882.

A Festival Run by the Wagner Family

After Wagner’s death the festival passed to his widow Cosima and then through the family. It reopened in 1951 after the Second World War under his grandsons Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner, whose productions redefined how Wagner is staged. His great-granddaughter Katharina Wagner leads the festival today.

The Festspielhaus on the Green Hill

Wagner supervised the building of the Festspielhaus himself. Its hidden orchestra pit, darkened auditorium and fan-shaped seating were radical in the 1870s and shaped theatre design for the century that followed. The house still stages only Wagner’s works, and only his ten mature operas.

Booking Bayreuth Festival Tickets for a Group

For a Wagner society trip, a family celebration or a client visit, tell us the size of your group and the operas you want. Seats are allocated in pairs where possible, and for five or more guests we recommend calling before you book so we can plan the dates together.
