Royal Opera House Carmen: Story, Music and Production

The story of Carmen

Carmen is set in Seville. The soldier Don José is engaged to the gentle Micaëla, but he is drawn to Carmen, a free-spirited worker in the cigarette factory who lives by her own rules. Her flirtation costs him his career, and when she turns to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José’s jealousy leads to the opera’s tragic end outside the bullring. The libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy is based on Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella.

Who wrote Carmen opera

The question who wrote Carmen opera has a clear answer: Georges Bizet composed it, and it was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875. Bizet died only three months later, never knowing that Carmen would become one of the most performed operas in the world.

The music you will know

At Royal Opera House Carmen the audience waits for the great numbers: the Habanera, the Seguidilla, the Toreador Song and Don José’s Flower Song. Bizet’s score is packed with Spanish colour and is played live by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, which is what makes the Carmen opera royal opera house sound so rich, and it is one reason Carmen is such a good first opera.

Damiano Michieletto’s production

Damiano Michieletto is one of the leading opera directors working today, known for productions that make familiar stories feel immediate, and his Royal Opera House Carmen is built on that reputation. His Carmen brings the drama close to the audience, which is why Royal Opera House Carmen carries an age guidance of 8 and over and depicts murder, with themes of a sexual nature and violence.

Is Carmen opera in Italian?

No. Is Carmen opera in Italian is one of the most common questions, but Carmen is a French opera. What language is Carmen opera sung in? French, with English surtitles displayed on screens above the stage and around the auditorium.

A Short History of Carmen the Opera

From Mérimée’s novella to the stage

Prosper Mérimée published his novella Carmen in 1845. Georges Bizet and his librettists Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy turned it into an opéra comique, with spoken dialogue between the numbers, and it was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875.

An opera that took time to win its audience

Early reactions in Paris were mixed, and Bizet died in June 1875, aged 36. Within a few years Carmen had been reworked with sung recitatives and taken up by opera houses across Europe, and it has since become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world. At the Royal Opera House, Bizet’s score remains at the heart of the evening.
