Donizetti’s Don Pasquale: The Opera

The story

Don Pasquale, a wealthy elderly bachelor, is furious that his nephew Ernesto wants to marry Norina, a young widow with no fortune. To disinherit him, Pasquale decides to marry himself. His doctor, Malatesta, secretly on the young couple’s side, offers him his shy, convent-educated “sister Sofronia”, who is really Norina in disguise. The moment a sham marriage contract is signed, the demure bride becomes a spendthrift tyrant, and the humbled Pasquale is only too glad to let Ernesto marry Norina after all.

The music

Donizetti wrote the score at speed at the height of his fame, and it is full of melody: Norina’s cavatina “Quel guardo il cavaliere”, Ernesto’s lament “Cercherò lontana terra”, his moonlit serenade “Com’è gentil”, and the breathless patter duet for Pasquale and Malatesta, “Cheti, cheti, immantinente”, one of the great comic show-stoppers.

Don Pasquale at the Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera’s most recent staging is Damiano Michieletto’s production, first seen at Covent Garden in October 2019 with Bryn Terfel in the title role and Olga Peretyatko as Norina. It moves the story to a modern setting and plays up the sadness beneath the comedy of an old man who wants to be loved. Casting, conductor and production for any future run will be confirmed by the house when dates are announced, and we will pass them on when we contact you.

A Short History of Don Pasquale

Donizetti composed Don Pasquale in 1842, reworking a libretto by Angelo Anelli with Giovanni Ruffini, who later asked for his name to be removed. It was written for the star singers of the Théâtre-Italien in Paris, including Giulia Grisi as Norina and Luigi Lablache as Pasquale, and was a triumph from its first night on 3 January 1843. It reached London that same year and has remained one of the most-performed comic operas in the repertoire.
