Ain’t too Proud the Musical Opens: Friday, 31 March 2023

The rhythms of “My Girl”, “Just My Imagination” and more of The Temptations’ greatest hits blast from the Prince Edward Theatre in 2023, as hit jukebox musical Ain’t Too Proud makes a dazzling West End debut.

Following the Motown legends from humble beginnings in Detroit all the way to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Ain’t Too Proud reveals the true story behind the sharp dance moves and slick harmonies that earned The Temptations 14 Number Ones. Brotherhood, betrayals and perseverance to succeed all feature in this exhilarating musical, set to the sounds of just some of the group’s 42 Top Ten Hits.

The musical was a Broadway sensation between 2019 and 2022 and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical, eventually winning for Best Choreography.

You’ll discover the amazing story of the glittering US vocal group from Detroit who released a load of cool Motown hits through the ‘60s and ‘70s. Together with producer Norman Whitfield, they created psychedelic soul, which in turn helped inspire modern R&B and soul music.

A fresh new musical from the same year, it follows the band from the back streets of Detroit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an extraordinary journey. Thanks to their uniquely smooth dance moves and legendary harmonies, the group hit the top ten charts forty-two times. Fourteen of their top ten smashes got to number one.

Produced in the West End by Ira Pittelman, Tom Hulce, Stephen Gabriel and Jamie Wilson, this fantastic musical reveals how the band members met, how they rose to the top of the Motown soul scene, the astonishing heights they hit, and the personal and political conflicts that threatened to tear them apart. It’s set against the backdrop of the USA experiencing serious civil unrest, adding extra depth.

This story of brotherhood, family, loyalty and betrayal is set to the sounds of The Temptations. Expect something heavenly with a sharp edge.
