Stephen Sondheim’s beloved classic Sunday in the Park With George is set to return to London next year in a limited run at the Savoy Theatre. Following their acclaimed performances in the concert version at the New York City Center’s 2016 Gala, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford will star as George and Dot/Marie, respectively.
Inspired by the French pointillist painter Georges Seurat’s infamous work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the musical follows George and his immersion in painting his masterpiece. Utterly consumed by his need to “finish the hat,” George rejects his fellow artists, and neglects his lover Dot, not realising that his actions will leave irrevocable marks over the next 100 years. It soon becomes clear that the life of his great-grandson (also named George) – a conflicted contemporary artist working one hundred years later – has been touched by George’s actions a century earlier.
