Engelbert Humperdinck’s dark, often comic and ultimately uplifting operatic version of a familiar fairy-tale told by the Brothers Grimm returns to the Royal Opera House after far too long an absence – 1937 was the last time it was seen at Covent Garden. With a score that combines the simplicity of German folk music with the orchestral richness of Wagner, Hänsel und Gretel (1893) is a work that appeals to adults and children alike, and its evocation of the menacing forest, mysterious apparitions and a comic-grotesque witch are conjured up stylishly in this new production by the directorial duo of Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, regulars at Covent Garden.
