Background

Peter Wright’s glorious 1984 production for The Royal Ballet owes much of its staying power to its intelligent narrative and the historically inspired designs of Julia Trevelyan Oman. The Act I party takes place in a household where every detail – from grandpa’s Biedermeier bath chair to the children’s muslin-wrapped presents to the gilded wooden angels on the tree – anchors the action in early 19th-century Nuremberg, the setting of the original Hoffmann story.
